*Status of Grant Applications

*Other Impacts to Lake Health

*Other discussions
The public should be alert to ways to minimize pollution of our lakes in East Haddam, such as using organic mulch or EPA approved EQ (Exceptional Quality) organic fertilizer on lawns that abut waterways, mowing grass at a 3 inch minimum height and never raking or blowing leaves into the water. This will reduce the amount of phosphorus in the water; as phosphorus enhances the growth of algae and invasive aquatic plants.

Also, the Chatham Health District reminds all residents to acquire permits for any septic work and pump-outs; pump-outs are required every five years and protect the environment as well as avoiding septic system failure and resulting inconvenience and expensive repair or replacement.
