What do you think should be done with the old middle school building in East Haddam?

 

A stately red-brick building sits vacant in the Moodus section of East Haddam; it's halls once filled with lively noises of middle school students rushing to class. The building now sits empty, its classrooms echoing with voices of former students that have long since graduated and moved on. (Current students attend classes in the newer Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School that houses grades 4 through 8.)

The "old middle school building", as it has been dubbed, has been the source of chatter around town. Not to mention, used as arson in local political .

What should be done with the old building? How much would it cost the town to make it usable again? How much is it currently costing the town to allow it to sit empty? What is being done to move forward with revitalizing the building? Is the MSCC (Middle School Conversion Committee) that was formed still active? And, at what cost is it worth it to the tax payers to do something about the building?

Former East Haddam student and resident, David Winakor, recently posted some compelling photos from his website on the Past Students of Nathan Hale Ray High School Facebook page that point to the current condition of the building. The images can be viewed here.
