Multiple Injuries Reported In Serious Crash On Route 81 In Haddam

One patient was airlifted to an area hospital, while four others were transported by ambulance, officials said.

HADDAM, CT — Several people were injured in a serious crash which shut down a local road for hours Monday afternoon.

State police said the multi-car accident happened about 3:25 p.m.

The Haddam Volunteer Fire Company reported three vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened near the Dollar General on Killingworth Road, or Route 81, in the Higganum section of town.

According to fire officials, four patients were transported via ambulance to Middlesex Hospital, Hartford Hospital, and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC), and one patient was airlifted via Life Star helicopter to CCMC.

A landing zone for the helicopter was set up at Burr Elementary School. One additional person was evaluated on scene, but refused any additional medical treatment, fire officials said.

The state Department of Transportation reported Route 81 was closed in both directions in the area of Burr Road, but the road had reopened by Monday evening.

The Connecticut State Police are investigating the accident.
