One of the largest fuel tax hikes in state history is scheduled to go into effect July 1.
Gasoline tax, already 22 cents higher than in neighboring states such as Massachusetts, will be raised another four cents per gallon. This is in addition to the enormous 25 cent tax per gallon the state already places on gasoline. At the same time, Connecticut’s Diesel Fuel Tax is scheduled to increase by 3.5 cents per gallon, and will have a ripple effect that will increase consumer costs on everything from groceries and clothing, to construction, as well as other goods and services.
This tax will NOT be used to pay for highway maintenance as it was originally promised, but instead will eventually be used to pay other debts such as state government operating expenses. This is due to the State Legislature passing laws that allow such funds to be tapped to help balance the over $2 billion deficit in the state budget. Other funds, such as the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority which overseas clean energy research, have already been tapped.
