State Police to the Haddams-Killingworth Residents: Do Not Promote 'After-Christmas Shopping' at Recycling Bins

When recycling holiday gift packaging, get any "advertising" for thieves inside the bins, state police said.

State police have sent out a simple but serious message for residents as they begin to get rid of boxes and other packaging from holiday gifts.

"Don't advertise," troopers said in a Twitter post.

That means residents should break down boxes and put them in the appropriate bins, state police said.

"Thieves are then less tempted to after-Christmas shop in your home," state police said.

Many towns allow overflow recycling to be dropped off at local transfer stations free of charge.
