Winter Events at the Ct River Museum
Want to get out and about in the ct River Valley? The Ct River Museum is the place to go!
While most of the State of Connecticut is in hibernation mode, the Connecticut River Museum has a full slate of programs and events going on. The CRM is the perfect way to beat any case of “cabin fever”.
First up, the ever popular Holiday Train Show is about to pull out of the station on February 15th. Steve Cryan has done just an amazing job putting this show together for us over the years, and we are always extremely grateful for the time and effort he puts into this great display. The Holiday Train Show also has an “I Spy” game that will keep the little ones busy. Oh, and smile for the video camera that is aboard one of the trains, as you get a track level view!
February and March is the time of year where you can see migrating and resident Bald Eagles as well as other incredible raptors on the Ct River. Our Eagle Watch takes place aboard Project Oceanology’s Enviro-Lab III, so you can get “indoors” if the weather is a bit too cold for you. You will also see other wildlife while on this tour, and seal sightings are not unusual. Once you are done, or before you head out, you can stroll the Museum and check out all the exhibits documenting the history and ecology of the Ct River. On Feb. 14th, Horizon Wings will be at The Essex Town Hall for a live Birds of Prey presentation. Among their esteemed guests will be a Bald Eagle, a Peregrine Falcon, and a Screech Owl. We will also be hosting two Bird Photography workshops with one of the best in the field, Stanley Kolber. This is a can’t miss workshop for all of you photographers.

And, finally, on February 27th, we are holding our annual “Privateers Bash” fundraiser. Now you may see lots of people dresses as pirates, and wonder what’s up. Primarily, Privateers were “legal”, and under the orders and employment of a government. During both the Revolutionary War, and especially the War of 1812, Essex was one of the primary builders of “Privateers”. So much so, the Brits came and burnt or captured the ships being built in Essex, but more on that in April. The bash is all abiyt celebrating the history, and yes, we highly encourage you all to dress and talk like a Pirate, uhn, make that a “Privateer”. There will be live music, hor douevres, plenty of grog as well as prizes for best costume, and a drawing for lots of great prizes. Here’s all the details!
