1 Dead in Officer-Involved Shooting in Old Saybrook

State Police are investigating after a suspect was fatally shot by a member of the force’s tactical team early Saturday morning in Old Saybrook.

According to police, officers from the Old Saybrook police department with the assistance from Norwich Police responded to the Econo Lodge on Boston Post Road around 1 a.m. after learning that a suspect from several investigations was staying there.

After arriving on scene, officers saw the suspect through a motel room window brandishing a firearm, police said. Gunshots were also heard from inside the motel room. Officers secured the area and requested the Connecticut State Police S.W.A.T. team. for assistance with the barricaded suspect.

Econo Lodge customers were evacuated from surrounding motel rooms.

The State Police S.W.A.T. team entered the motel room and located the suspect, at which point the suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at them. Police said the suspect ignored orders to drop the weapon and continued to point the firearm at police.

At this point, a member of the S.W.A.T. team discharged their firearm striking the suspect, police said. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime Detectives responded to the scene, and will assume the investigation. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will also assist in the investigation to identify the deceased and determine cause and manner of death.

The identification of the S.W.A.T. team member who discharged his weapon is pending.

No other injuries were reported.
