One Person Dead in Double Stabbing Inside Big Y Supermarket in Old Lyme: UPDATE

State Police say the attack occurred inside the grocery story and a second person suffered serious injuries.

OLD LYME, CT — State Police say one person is confirmed dead in a double stabbing assault that occurred inside Big Y grocery store in Old Lyme.

Two people were involved, one deceased and one with serious injury, said State Police spokeswoman Kelly Grant. Grant said one of the victims was transported by LifeStar helicopter to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

She said "this was not a random act, they are known to one another."

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's Office will conduct post-mortem examination. Identification of the victims is being withheld pending positive identity and next of kin notification.

Originally, State Police said the attack occurred inside Big Y and then corrected that to the say the Big Y shopping plaza. State Police have now confirmed that the attack occurred inside the grocery store and that the store was closed while detectives investigated.

The scene was secured at 3:15 and the assault was reported at 2:12 p.m. No details have been released concerning the suspect except that he may have been injured.

OLD LYME, CT — State Police say the double stabbing in Old Lyme may not have been at the Big Y store itself but in the shopping plaza. Originally, State Police said the stabbing was at the store but 30 minutes later they corrected that information. State Police say one of the stabbing victims suffered life-threatening injuries during the attack.

"The scene is reported to be secure," said State Police spokeswoman Kelly Grant at 3:15 p.m. "There is no threat to the public or community. Troopers and detectives continue to investigate."

Detectives from State Police Central District Major Crime are enroute to assist with the investigation.

At 2:12 p.m. Troop F-Westbrook responded to the Big Y shopping plaza in Old Lyme for an assault, said Kelly Grant, state police spokeswoman. At least 2 people were stabbed, State Police said. The extent of their injuries is unknown, Grant said. Lifestar helicopter has been requested for one of the victims, Grant said. An ambulance is also at the scene for one of the victims, Grant said.

It appears the suspect is still at the scene and may have sustained injury, Grant said.

No further perceived threat to the public or community, she said. Updates will be given as information becomes available, State Police said.
