After Hitting Building, Niantic Man, 71, Charged With DUI

Police charged 71-year-old Edward Durgin, of 417 Main Street, with driving under the influence after hitting a car and building.

NIANTIC, CT—At 7 p.m. Thursday East Lyme Police began getting the calls. People reported that a car struck a building on Main Street. Police and the Niantic Fire Department responded. It turned out, the driver had not only hit a building, Chief Michael Finkelstein said, but when pulling into a driveway at 417 Main, hit a parked car then continued over the grass and hit the back of a building at the 413 Main Street address, which houses the Indigo Boutique. Finkelstein said the building was damaged. Posted store hours show the boutique closes at about the same time as the reports came in.

The driver was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital despite, police said, not appearing to have been injured. When he was released, he was arrested, Finkelstein said.

Edward Durgin lives at 417 Main Street, police said. The 71-year-old was charged with driving under the influence.
