EAST LYME, CT — An 18-year-old is accused of taking a loaded gun from a gas station restroom in East Lyme during the summer, according to police.
Police said a woman entered the Henny Penny gas station on West Main Street and used the restroom June 5.
While inside, she placed a gun on a shelf and accidentally left it behind when she left.
She came back a short time later and discovered the gun was missing.
Police reviewed surveillance footage and found that only one person had entered the restroom after the woman left the gun behind.
He had exited quickly and left the business in a tan Chevrolet Malibu. Shortly after, the woman had returned to the restroom to find that the gun was gone.
Investigators used the town's Flock License Plate Reader system to search for the suspect's car.
Police then obtained search warrants for cell phone information and dash camera footage from the suspect's car.
Elijah Bermudez, 18, of Bristol, was charged with theft of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit, according to police.
He was held on a court-set bond of $20,000.
