Arrest Made in Old Lyme Bank Robbery
A 38-year-old Groton man was arrested after allegedly robbing Webster Bank and leaving the scene on a getaway bicycle.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, detectives and local police identified Herman E. ‘Butchie’ Smith as a suspect in the Sept. 23 Webster Bank robbery in Old Lyme.
According to Connecticut State Police, the suspect arrived at the Webster Bank on a bicycle, allegedly robbed the bank of an undisclosed amount and left on the bike.
CT State Police Central District Major Crime Squad detectives, with the assistance of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police Department, located Smith and took him into custody. Smith was transported to Troop F where he was processed and held on bond.

Smith, 38, of 50 George Ave., Groton, was arrested on the following charges:
- Robbery in the Second Degree
- Larceny in the Second Degree
He was issued a $500,000 court-set bond and a Sept. 25 court date in New London Superior Court.

Detectives from the CT State Police Central District Major Crime Squad, with the assistance of Troopers from Troop F-Westbrook, and the Old Lyme Police Department, obtained an arrest warrant from the New London Superior Court.
