Blues Maven Sue Foley at The Knickerbocker Cafe Oct 24
Sue Foley's Latest Release, The Ice Queen gathers ensemble of Austin, TX All-Stars and Delivers Epic Blues
Canadian blues maven, Sue Foley, makes a tour stop this Wednesday, October 24 at the Knickerbocker Café in Westerly, RI. It’s fitting that Foley supports her new release, “The Ice Queen”, at The Knick because this shoreline venue has hosted many of her musical mentors and compatriots from her days in Austin, TX. This rare appearance is not to be missed as Miss Foley delivers her tunes with a voice that is sweet and sultry yet haunting while her guitar playing embodies a deep understanding of the blues idiom possessed by few musicians past or present.
Sue Foley fell into the scene around Antone’s nightclub in Austin, TX when she was just twenty-one years old. She shared the stage with everyone from B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Albert Collins and so many others. The title of the latest release is a nod to “The Ice Man” Albert Collins yet a double entendre also referring to Foley’s Canadian roots.
Foley reunited with a host of Texas stalwarts on “The Ice Queen”. Produced by Mike Flanigin, who also plays organ on the new disc, “The Ice Queen” was recorded at Firestation Studios in San Marcos, Texas. Joining Sue Foley as special guests is a trio of legendary Texas guitar slingers – Jimmie Vaughan, Z.Z. Top’s Billy F Gibbons and Charlie Sexton - as well as a host of other Lone Star State all-stars, including Chris “Whipper” Layton (formerly of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) and George Rains (drums), Derek O’Brien (guitar), Chris Maresh and Billy Horton (bass) and The Texas Horns: John Mills, Al Gomez, Jimmy Shortell, Randy Zimmerman and legendary sax player Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff. “The Ice Queen” touches on various moods and vibes but the joy shines through on the vocals with old pals Charlie Sexton, Billy F Gibbons and especially Jimmie Vaughan. Be assured this is not an over-produced all-star effort rather a family reunion jam where the ensemble plays each tune with respect for the material and one another. Foley puts on a raucous stage show. I fondly recall seeing Sue go toe to toe with Ronnie Earl at the height of his prowess and Mr. Earl had his hands full. By all means, catch Sue Foley at The Knickerbocker Café in Westerly this Wednesday. Tickets and information available here: https://knickmusic.com/events/2018/10/24/sue-foley
