Costco Opens Thursday In East Lyme! That $75 Coupon? It's A Hoax

EAST LYME, CT — Proof that time flies: Costco opens in East Lyme Thursday morning. Then again, the first time Patch reported on the "buzz" about a Costco coming to town was back in July of 2013 when planning and zoning blessed the first in what would be many stages of the dubbed-Gateway Development Project.

And here we are six years later. Who says time does not fly?

Costco Wholesale, actually a retailer, says it blazed the "warehouse club concept more than three decades ago."

It costs $60 for a family to join for a year, and up for premium and business memberships. And a membership is good for all the stores worldwide; from Australia to Japan to the U.K. to the USA.The company boasts that, "many of our members save the amount of their membership fee in their first few trips to Costco."

And, it appears folks either have already bought memberships, or plan to, if social posts are any indication. There might be a line if the 4,000 on Facebook who say they're going show up are there when the doors open at the 284 Flanders Road store at 8 a.m.

Meanwhile, the 43-year-old Issaquah, Washington-based company cautioned on Facebook that some apparent $75 coupons being shared on social media are fake.

"Despite several posts out there, Costco is NOT giving away $75 coupons. While we love our fans and our members, this offer is a SCAM, and in no way affiliated with Costco. Thanks to our fans for letting us know about this recurring hoax!"

The new Costco is located 284 Flanders Road, in East Lyme. The store opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 8:30 p.m. It's so new, an image of the store doesn't show up on Google maps, but click here for directions.
