East Lyme School Board Votes To Arm Security Officers Across District Schools

The East Lyme Board of Education voted 6-3 to arm trained retired law enforcement officers in schools.

The East Lyme Board of Education voted 6-3 this week to arm security officers in the district’s schools, according to school security coverage by WFSB.

The district currently has a school safety and security director and other unarmed security staff, but no armed guards and no school resource officer, WFSB reported. According to the station, the armed guards will be retired law enforcement officers and they will serve across the district’s five schools.

WFSB reported that the superintendent said the police chief wants school resource officers in all schools eventually, but staffing remains an issue.
