Lyme-Old Lyme Students Honored By CT Superintendent's Group

From Lymes Schools: Madeline Zrenda and John Manthous, students at Lyme-Old Lyme High School, have been awarded the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents’ (CAPSS) Superintendent/Student Recognition Award for leadership service to the school, academic prowess relative to ability, and service to others in the community at a ceremony held November 27, 2017 at Saybrook Point Inn. Ian Neviaser, Superintendent of Schools of Regional School District 18, made the presentation as part of a program designed by school administrators to recognize students who have served their schools and communities while maintaining good scholastic progress.

The Superintendent/Student Recognition Program awards a Certificate of Excellence at the discretion of the local superintendent of schools according to a distribution formula set for all state school districts. Awards are generally given during American Education Week in November in order to provide a meaningful focus for each school district and to enhance the quality of the certificate. Maddie Zrenda is a leader and role model at Lyme-Old Lyme High known for her perseverance and character. A National Honor Society member, she has challenged herself with rigorous courses and achieved excellent results across all disciplines. Maddie is committed to learning and has been recognized with numerous awards. She is mature, tenacious, bright and conscientious, and is counted on in our community to be an involved and generous leader.

Maddie’s level of involvement in so many community minded activities has made a great impact on our school environment. From her work as Class President and Student Ambassador for the Board of Education, to her contributions to our Youth Service Bureau’s Drug and Alcohol Awareness panel and her leadership in both the classroom and the playing field, Maddie’s impact is extensive. While she is a high profile and successful member of our community, it is clear that she has earned the respect of both faculty and peers as much for her positive impact, as for her humility and kindness to others.

John “Jack” Manthous is a wonderful leader and role model in our school and community. His academic prowess shows clearly in his strong grades in very high level classes and has also led to awards of academic excellence in English and math courses. He is a responsible and motivated student who gets the job done, and done well.

Jack is equally invested outside the classroom as a long standing member of the Community Service Club and Student Leaders and as a member of the stage crew for the school musical. He is a valued multi-season athlete, running both cross country and track, where he is an avid competitor as well as invested in team camaraderie. Endeavoring to expand his horizons, Jack has recently added the academic clubs of the Spanish Honor Society and Mock Trial to his repertoire, building his public speaking and critical thinking skills in new and demanding ways. Jack continues to build upon all his talents to our benefit, and we are lucky to have him among our top students. CAPSS, the statewide school superintendents’ professional organization, is based in West Hartford and provides professional development, personal support, statewide conferences, legislative information and educational services to its membership.
