Niantic Inmate's Death Under Investigation

Police are investigating the situation. BREAKING

NIANTIC, CT - The Connecticut Department of Correction is investigating the death of an inmate at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic.

Police said correctional staff conducting a routine tour observed an inmate in her cell with a ligature tied to her neck at about 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. She was the only inmate in the cell at the time, according to a release.

Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures. The inmate was then transported to a local area hospital, where she passed away on Thursday.

The victim was identified as Monica Piette, 32, of Moodus. She was charged with criminal violation of a protective order and was being held on $92,500 bond.

She had entered the York Correctional Institution on December 16.

Police said the exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction Security Division and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death.
