Niantic Man, 22, Charged With DUI, Fireworks Possession

The popping off of fireworks behind East Lyme High School Sunday led to the arrest of Joseph Nahass, 22, of Niantic.

EAST LYME, CT — Police charged a 22-year-old Niantic man with being drunk and setting off fireworks, according to a press release.

East Lyme Police report they received a fireworks complaint coming from the rear of East Lyme High School. Arriving officers found cars leaving the area and pulled them over. Police said Joseph Nahass of 22 Sea Breeze Ave., failed a field sobriety test and was charged with driving under the influence.

Police searched his car and found "170 consumer grade fireworks" and called in the East Lyme Fire Marshal and the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad to destroy the fireworks. Nahass was also charged with illegal possession of fireworks. He was released on a $1,000 non-surety bond, police said.
