Obituary: John P. Delaney, 76, of Niantic

Delaney loved to garden, do puzzles, woodworking, but most of all, spending time with his family.

John P. Delaney, 76, of Corey Lane, Niantic, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.

John was born April 28, 1939, in Baldwinsville, N.Y., the son of Clarence and Elizabeth Delaney. He married Margaret Abbiati on June 22, 1963, in New London.

John graduated from Baldwinsville High School and then joined the U.S. Navy, serving from July 31, 1957 until July 28, 1961. He worked for 32 years for AT&T as a central office tech. He loved to garden, do puzzles, wood working, but most of all spending time with his family. He volunteered many hours with the Boy Scouts, Little League and softball. He was a member of the Pioneers and the American Legion.

Besides his wife of 52 years, Margaret, he is survived by his sons, Michael Delaney of New London, John Delaney and his wife, Joann, of Norton, Mass., and Kevin Delaney and his wife, Jennifer, of Hebron; a daughter, Kathleen Haskell and her husband, Eric, of Guilford; a brother, Charles Delaney of Syracuse, N.Y.; and a sister, Elizabeth Braundel of North Carolina; and five grandchildren, Scott Delaney, Jacob Delaney, Alexandra Delaney, Stephanie Delaney, and Braden Haskell. John was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, at St. Agnes Church, Haigh St., Niantic. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic.
