OLD LYME, CT – A local couple was thrilled to find a keepsake they had buried 26 years ago in Ireland to mark their 25th wedding anniversary, according to media reports.
Bill and Laurie McGrath have been married for two and half decades, with four children and four grandchildren, NBC Connecticut reported. When the two were dating in 1990, Bill gave his then-girlfriend a heart-shaped necklace that broke in two.
Laurie buried half the necklace while on a trip to Ireland near an old cemetery and church, The Day reported. The pendant was buried within a box and plastic bag, then placed in a hole 3 or 4 inches below the ground, which she dug with a spoon, with a rock over it.

The couple used pictures and other guides to find their way back to the spot the gift had been buried, according to NBC Connecticut. While the box and the note buried with the item had disintegrated, the pendant was still there shiny as ever.
The pendant has the words “best friend” inscribed on it, Fox 61 reported. The couple was overjoyed to have found the item that acted as a symbol of their live; still intact and shining after more than two decades.
