Retreat offered for those with serious illness and their caregivers
NIANTIC – “We saw a need and responded,” says parish nurse Marie La Tourette. She is one of a group of members and friends at Niantic Community Church presenting a retreat program at Mercy Center in Madison on Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Journeying Through Life with Serious Illness: a day retreat for those who are ill and the people who love them, invites participants to slow down and embrace much needed rest and rejuvenation apart from life’s daily challenges.
The program, which takes place at Mercy Center’s beautiful Long Island Sound location will begin with a short prayer service offered by Rev. Dr. John Nelson, pastor and teacher at Niantic Community Church, followed by a choice of morning and afternoon workshops. The Keynote speaker is Kenric A. Prescott, pastor and teacher at Union Baptist Church of Hartford. A continental breakfast and hot lunch is included.
Among the workshop topics are: fitness for caregivers and team building being presented by Joanne Moore of Shoreline Physical Therapy in East Lyme; Journaling as a tool for healing presented by Marie La Tourette; Expressive Arts presented by Amy Barry and Listening with the Heart presented by Lydia Myers, Spiritual Care Counselor for Center for Hospice Care Eastern Connecticut, as well as other topics.
The cost is $45 per person all inclusive and registration deadline is August 17, although late registrations will be accepted on a space available basis. Some scholarships funds are available. This event is sponsored by Parish Life and Health Care Ministries of NCC and is one of many community outreach offerings at Niantic Community Church, which opens all services with, “Whoever you are, wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” Summer worship is celebrated Sundays at 9:30 a.m. NCC is located at 170 Pennsylvania Avenue, Niantic.
