Black Art Jazz Collective is a collaborative ensemble comprised of Jazz’s finest rising stars. Black Art Jazz Collective; Jeremy Pelt – Trumpet, Wayne Escoffery - Tenor Saxophone, James Burton – Trombone, Xavier Davis – Piano, Gerald Cannon – Bass, Johnathan Blake - Drums

Each member is a leader in his own right and has also been an integral part of groups led by pioneers of the music including Tom Harrell, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Louis Hayes, Freddie Hubbard and many, many others.

The founding members of the group are Wayne Escoffery, Jeremy Pelt and Johnathan Blake. In the summer of 2012 Escoffery reached out to his long time friends and musical partners Jeremy and Johnathan and expressed his desire to form a collective of likeminded musicians from the same generation dedicated to celebrating African American cultural and political icons, as well as preserving the historical significance of African Americans in Jazz.

In April of 2013 the band made its debut with a three night engagement at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York City. This Side Door appearance will be the group’s premiere performance in Connecticut and the program will consist of all original music primarily inspired by African American Icons. Some of the compositions will include Double Consciousness by Wayne Escoffery (inspired by W.E.B. Dubois), No Small Change by Xavier Davis (inspired by Barack Obama) and The Essence of Beauty by Jeremy Pelt.
