Mandatory Water Conservation for East Lyme Water Customers

Mandatory Irrigation Schedule

Explanation: Lower rainfall, combined with high water demand, has led the State of Connecticut’s interagency Drought Working Group to declare that all eight counties in the state are experiencing Stage 2 Drought conditions. These conditions can lead to a drought event and can impact water supplies, agriculture, and the environment. Considering these conditions, East Lyme Water is reminding its customers about the importance of water conservation.

Homes and businesses with automatic sprinkler irrigation systems often use large volumes of water – about 40% more than properties without the systems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other experts identify the overuse of outdoor irrigation as a major source of strain on local water supplies while providing no benefit to lawns and gardens.

Research shows that lawns and gardens can thrive on reduced watering. By encouraging roots to grow deeper into the soil, they’re able to absorb more moisture and nutrients, even during dry spells.

The mandatory twice-weekly irrigation schedule is in effect until further notice.
