William Burt: New Photographs and Old Art Opening and Gallery Talk

Meet photographer and writer William Burt. Reception from 5-7pm, with a gallery talk at 6pm.

Opening art reception for William Burt: New Photographs & Old on Friday, October 17, from 5:00-7:00 pm. A gallery talk will take place at 6:00 pm.

The show samples William Burt’s photography of the birds few people see, and the wetland scenes we often see. Some are from past traveling exhibitions, and were taken up to 40 years ago; some were made only months ago. The birds featured are the rare and elusive birds of wetlands, and the downy young of wetland birds – some of them cuties, and some comic monsters. Most photographs selected were made locally, within the Connecticut River estuary, but also included are one each respectively from Florida, North Dakota, and Saskatchewan.

William Burt is a naturalist, photographer, and writer with a passion for wild places and elusive birds – especially marshes, and the shy birds within. His photographs and stories are seen in Smithsonian, Audubon, National Wildlife and other magazines. He is the author of three books: Shadowbirds (1994); Rare & Elusive Birds of North America (2001); and Marshes: The Disappearing Edens (2007). He lectures often, and his traveling exhibitions have shown at 35 museums across the U.S. and Canada, including The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, The New Brunswick Museum, The Calgary Science Center, The Liberty, The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and the Harvard Museum of Natural History.

In 1989, for an exhibition of Burt’s photography of marsh birds, Roger Tory Peterson wrote the following:

William Burt is a perfectionist whose photographs of rails and other shy and elusive birds of the wetlands are unquestionably the finest ever taken. I admire his technical skill and perseverance (14 years) in getting these pictures. He has set a new standard.
