Tolland residents who are Connecticut Water customers can check whether their service line material is listed as unknown and help identify it online. In a notice dated Wednesday, Oct. 28, the company asked customers with unknown pipe materials to submit a survey and photo.
The effort is part of an Environmental Protection Agency inventory requirement covering both company-owned and customer-owned service lines, according to Connecticut Water. A service line is the underground pipe connecting a street water main to a home. The company maintains infrastructure up to about the property line, while homeowners are responsible for pipes from there to and inside the home.
Connecticut Water has reviewed paper and digital records, but some pipe materials remain unknown. Customers who received a postcard or email about the effort have service lines listed as unknown. The company is asking only customers with that designation to participate.
"By taking a few minutes to self-report your service line material, you may help us avoid the need for additional inspections at your property," Connecticut Water said in the announcement. Otherwise, contractors may need to dig a small hole in the yard using hydro excavation to inspect the pipe.
Customers can check their service line status and self-report, a process the company describes as taking a few minutes and requiring a visit to the water meter. Questions can be directed to Connecticut Water at 1-800-286-5700 or customerservice@ctwater.com.
