On September 17, the Pomfret School community gathered for its annual academic convocation, which recognized close to 50 students for their academic achievements from the 2010-2011 school year. This year’s opening of school academic celebration had special meaning, as Pomfret also installed Tim Richards as its twelfth Head of School.
President of the Board of Trustees Peter Grauer gave the official introduction of Tim. “Let me underscore that today is probably one of the most important days in Pomfret’s history,” exclaimed Grauer. “It marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Pomfret School.”

Grauer noted the extensive and rigorous search process for this position. “Over 125 candidates applied, demonstrating that this position was highly sought after. And, if I may say so, with the appointment of Tim Richards, we nailed it! He was head and shoulders above the competition and fit the profile and needs of our school perfectly. Tim comes from a family committed to secondary school education, its traditions and its values.”

Tim grew up on the campus of Phillips Andover and, with the exception of his four years at Connecticut College, has always lived on a boarding school campus. He has served in a variety of roles throughout his career: teacher, dorm parent, coach, advisor, and administrator.
Reflecting about what qualifies him to be Pomfret School’s 12th head of school, Tim commented, “I know boarding schools. I have spent the majority of my life at these schools, learning what makes them work. I have a passion for, an abiding belief in, and a well-informed understanding of the boarding school model.”
He continued, “In the short time I have been associated with Pomfret School, I have already come to know its students, its pervasive and deeply real sense of community, its unusually engaged and talented faculty and its commitment to preparing young people for the increasingly challenging world. As I stand here this morning I am humbled by the fact that I’ve been given the opportunity to lead this exceptional school.”
