Another Successful Open House for the Tolland Fire Department

This week is Fire Prevention Week, stressing how to avoid kitchen fires.

The Tolland Fire Department on Saturday sponsored its annual open house and the crowds flocked to the event at the Fire Training Center.

On Monday, TFD officials formally thanked residents who came out.

"We were happy the weather held off and that the event was well-attended," Assistant Public Safety Director Douglas Racicot said.

The department had refreshments available for attendees, including pizza donated by Papa Gino’s in Vernon.

TFD members demonstrated what a vehicle air bag looks like when it goes off during a crash. Members also demonstrated how its hydraulic extrication tools work to free victims who are trapped after an accident.

Bill's Auto Parts of Tolland donated the vehicle used in the demonstration.

It also kicked off Fire Prevention Week - Oct 6 to 12. This year's theme is “Preventing Kitchen Fires.”

More fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home, Racicot said.
