Car Crashes Through I-84 Rest Area

The driver blamed a malfunction.

TOLLAND/WILLINGTON — A driver traveling on Interstate-84 eastbound went crashing through the Willington rest area on Friday morning and he blamed it on his hood randomly detaching from its clip.

The crash took place at 8:49 a.m., when a 2005 Toyota Camry driven by 26-year-old Matthew Strenk, of Dudley, MA, on the Tolland side of the I-84 rest area, according to a report.

The car suddenly veered off the road and took out the rest area entrance sign and knocked over a light pole, according to a report.

Strenk did not report the incident and left the scene after his car was towed to Massachusetts, state police said in a report.

Strenk was charged with evading responsibility and a land violation, according to a report. He is due to appear in court on Sept. 27, according to a report.

He told police his hood went up without warning and he lost control of the car, state police said.
