Chair Report: August 25 Town Council Special & Regular Meeting Review

Public Hearing for Town Green Sidewalks Held, Grant for Vape Education/Prevention Approved, DPW Study Discussion Postponed & More Discussed.

Good morning neighbors, and happy final Friday of August to you! Please see below the chairperson’s report for the August 22nd special and regular meeting next week.

The Town Council first considered a proclamation request honoring Jeff Gallagher. After receiving feedback from fellow council members and the public, revisions will be made to this proclamation honoring Mr. Gallagher for final approval.

The council then held a public hearing on proposed ADA accessible sidewalks on the green. The plan is included in the packet and currently is being reviewed by the Planning & Zoning Commission (PZC) through an 8-24 referral. This hearing was for informational purposes and to get feedback from the community at large.

28 residents submitted feedback via email, with 21 listed as in support, 6 against and two with commentary. Other residents spoke up during the hearing, with a similar mixture of support, opposition, and general commentary.

Following the public hearing, the Town Council has three new items of business. The first of these was the review of a consultant-created study of the town’s Department of Public Works (DPW) fleet of vehicles, staffing and other topics, with recommendations to the town regarding future capital purchases and planning for the DPW. This item was postponed to the next regular meeting.

The second item of business was a consideration of a resolution to apply for a Local Prevention Council (LPC) grant through the State Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and Amplify. The grant supports educational and outreach efforts to reduce vaping among teens and increase public awareness on the risks of vaping. It was approved unanimously by the Town Council.

The final item of business was the appointment of a PZC alternate to fill a vacancy, which was also approved unanimously
