Driver Tries to Eat Drug Stash During I-84 Pursuit: Cops

A man is accused of trying to eat drugs while being followed on Interstate-84 in Tolland County, state police said.

TOLLAND, CT — A man being followed by a state trooper through Tolland County tried to eat his drug stash before getting pulled over, an arrest report indicates.

On Monday evening, Trooper Kyle Kaelberer was on patrol on the eastbound side of Interstate-84 when a white Nissan Maxima went whizzing past him, according to an arrest report. The car showed up on his database as being a rental stolen from Manchester in December, an arrest report indicates.

Kaelberer followed the car toward Union and Massachusetts troopers were waiting for the Nissan at the state line, but the driver came to an abrupt stop in the right-hand travel lane, according to an arrest report.

Another trooper managed to get the driver to pull to the shoulder over his intercom and when Kaelberer opened the door to the Nissan, he was trying to "swallow narcotics," according to to arrest report. Crack cocaine residue was visible on his chin, shirt and pants and on the driver's seat according to an arrest report.

He was eventually identified as 41-year-old Tyron Jones of Hartford, state police said.

An inventory of items seized includes 5.7 grams of crack, packaged for sale; $3,697 in U.S. currency; and 18.8 grams of marijuana.

Jones was charged with:

  • First-degree larceny by possession
  • Evidence tampering
  • Crack possession
  • Possession of crack with the intent to sell
  • Marijuana possession
  • Driving with a suspended license

He was brought to Rockville General Hospital for evaluation and then transported to the state police Troop C barracks. He was held on a $75,000 bond over night and was to appear in Rockville Superior Court on Wednesday, records indicate.
