TOLLAND, CT — After tending to crashes in the snow, helping battle a raging factory fire in Vernon and a burning house in Coventry Monday, a local appliance incident Tuesday capped off a wild beginning of the week for the Tolland Fire Department.

"It's been busy," Tolland Fire Chief John Littell said Wednesday, not trying to downplay his reaction but admitting he and his crews were a little tired. "Not only did we have the mutual aid calls, but it's that time of year for plenty of medical calls and other things that can happen in town."

The dryer incident took place at about 9 p.m. Tuesday on Carl Drive, fire officials said. Littell said no one was injured and the home is OK, but precautionary measures had to be taken in the neighborhood while the issue was taken care of.

Tolland sent both equipment and personnel to a fire that destroyed an old factory on Brooklyn Street in Vernon early Monday morning. The inferno began shortly before 2 a.m. and kept firefighters busy well into the late morning hours and even into the afternoon.

The TFD didn't get much rest. On Monday afternoon, the Squad 240 and Tank 140 vehicles responded to another mutual aid call, this time in Coventry and a burning home. Crews operated as a rapid intervention team and performed overhaul operations, Littell said.
