Elderly Woman Knocked Over In Tolland Energy Drink Theft: Cops

A man is accused of bowling over an elderly woman while trying to steal energy drinks from a Tolland supermarket.

TOLLAND, CT — A 55-year-old man is accused of scuffling with staffers and knocking over an elderly woman while trying to steal energy drinks from a Tolland supermarket, state police said.

The incident took place at 4:26 p.m. on Aug. 20 at the Big Y supermarket in Tolland, according to a report. John Nelson, of Meriden, was charged with third-degree assault on an elderly person, third-degree robbery, sixth-dgeree larceny and second-degree breach of peace, according to a report.

Nelson appeared in court the folowing day and his initial $30,000 bond was taken off the table and he was detained without bond, judicial system records indicate. Nelson was to attend a hearing on Friday, according to court records.

According to a report, Nelson tried to steal several cases of energy drinks and scuffles with staffers when confronted at the store. He then tried to run out of the store and grabbed and pushed over en elderly woman who was trying to enter Big Y, according to a report.

Staffer were then able to "regain" control and detain Nelseon until state police arrived, according to a report.
