Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street (1853) is a short story by the American writer Herman Melville, first serialized in Putnam’s Magazine. According to scholar Robert Milder it “is unquestionably the masterpiece of the short fiction” in the Melville canon. Join us for a lively discussion of this enigmatic work.

Discussion leader Joan Shapiro, Founder of Blue Spruce Press, has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Wesleyan and a Bachelor’s Degree from Brandeis in English and American Literature. She has had a thirty year career teaching, writing, editing and publishing. Her publications include two volumes of poetry, numerous short stories, articles, and reviews.
