New Tolland Census Data Available

Demographic, financial, population and education data is available for Tolland and many other towns.

The United States Census Bureau released the first set of Census 2010 population counts. It also recently released data collected from January 2005 to December 2009 for the town of Tolland as part of the American Community Survey.

POPULATION

The 2009 population estimate for Tolland is 14,823. It is estimated that 51.2 percent of the population is male, and 48.8 percent is female.

AGE OF POPULATION

The median age for all Tolland residents between 2005 and 2009 was estimated at 39.1 years old. There were 10, 594 residents over the age of 18 and 1,525 over age 65. An estimated 936 children were under the age of 5.

VALUES OF HOMES

The median value of a home in Tolland was $295,500. A majority of homes, 41.4 percent, were valued between $300,000 and $499,999. Only 14.1 percent of the housing in town was valued at below $200,000.

Almost 40 percent of Tolland households paid $2000 or more in monthly housing costs in the previous 12 months.

INCOME

The median earnings of individuals 25 years old and above between 2005 and 2009 was $58,390. The median earnings for men was $67,411, while the median earnings for women was $42,743

Just over 24.6 percent of residents in Tolland earned $100,000 or more. The median earnings of those with at least a high school degree was $42,026. Those with a bachelor’s degree earned a median income of $68,345. Those with a graduate or professional degree earned a median income of $81,938.

The median income of family households in Tolland was $110,871. The median household income reported in the past 12 months was $102,015.  Nonfamily households earned a median income of $41,328.

Of all Tolland workers, 1.7 percent had an income reported below the poverty level in the past 12 months.

Of all Tolland families, 122 received Supplemental Security Income and/or cash public assistance in the last 12 months. The number of residents receiving social security income was 945.

OCCUPATION

According to the 2005 to 2009 statistics, among the most common occupations were: management, professional, and related occupations at 59 percent; sales and office occupations, 24 percent; service occupations, 11 percent; production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 4 percent; and construction, extraction, maintenance, and repair occupations, 2 percent.

Eighty percent of those employed were private wage and salary workers. Thirteen percent were federal, state, or local government workers, and 7 percent was self-employed.

INDUSTRY

Of the estimated 8,280 employed residents age 16 and over, 1,260 worked in manufacturing, 960 worked in finance and insurance, 899 worked in educational services, 818 worked in healthcare and social assistance, and 664 worked in retail trade.

TRANSPORTATION TO WORK

Just over 79.5 percent of Tolland workers drove to work alone in 2005-2009, while 7 percent carpooled. None took public transportation. Among those who commuted to work, it is estimated that it took them 26.2 minutes to get to work on average.

EDUCATION

In 2005-2009, 95.2 percent of residents had at least a high school education. Forty-six percent had a bachelor’s degree. Only 162 residents had not graduated from high school.

There were 4,407 students over the age of 3 enrolled in Tolland schools. The majority, 42.6 percent, were in grades 1-8.

MARITAL STATUS AND FAMILIES

Of all Tolland males 15 years of age and older, 3,905 were estimated to be married. Of females, 3,758 were married.

There were 14,653 total households in Tolland, and 4,321 family households. The average family size in Tolland was 3.09. Fifty-one percent of the families had related children under the age of 18.

DEMOGRAPHICS

For people reporting one race alone 2005-2009, 94.1 percent was white non-Hispanic. Those identifying as Asian made up 2 percent of the populations, .8 percent identified as Black or African or American and .1 percent identified as American Indian and Alaska Native. Tolland residents who identified as Hispanic or Latino, of any race, were 1.6 percent of the population. Those who identified as two or more races made up 1.7 percent of the population.

Six percent of the town’s population spoke a language other than English at home.

According to the 2005-2009 data, 4.1 percent of residents of Tolland were born outside the U.S.
