TOLLAND, CT — A big, fun-loving black bear was frolicking round the center of Tolland this week.

Just ask Town Manager Brian Foley.

Foley said he was on the road early Thursday morning and when he was passing through the 100 block of Cider Mill Road, he spotted what he termed a "large untagged black bear" peeking his head out from behind a stone wall at No. 195.

"It was playing hide-and-seek seek," he said.

Though he didn't have much luck with video, Foley was able to capture a still image of the bear from a safe distance:

Though the picture by Foley seemed cute, state wildlife officials said to take them seriously. Here are some bear tips from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection:

  • Observe bears from distance.
  • Make noise if you need to encourage them to leave your yard or to get them out of your way in outdoor settings like hiking and camping.
  • If bear is seen in populated or heavily trafficked area or if the animal is acting boldly, call local police or talk to animal control officer. In case of true emergency situation call the DEEP at 860-424-3333.
  • Secure garbage can lids and try to prevent access for bears.
  • Clean your outdoor grill grease traps - bear love to pry them loose and lick the drippings.
