Picture Tolland: 3 Prominent Citizens

TOLLAND, CT — The latest installment of the picture Tolland series takes a look at a trio of prominent residents.

Details on the undated gathering come from the notebook of the former town historian, the late Barbara Cook.

Cook's notes tell us that Luther Barnard, Bertha Place and Emery Clough were all prominent in the community and the Congregational Church Sunday school in the middle of the 20th century.

Barnard served as superintendent of the Sunday school.

Place, also a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, was the "postmistress" at the post office in her home at 55 Tolland Green.

Clough was sexton of the church and was the town tax collector for many years.
