Picture Tolland: The Great December Gas Station Fire

TOLLAND, CT — The latest installment of the Picture Tolland series takes us back 65 years to a fire that ravaged a local filling station.

It was Dec. 2, 1956, and the fire broke out at the Noyes Gas Station in town.

It was completely engulfed in flames and dramatic pictures from longtime Tolland Fire Department photographer Ellery Kington showed first-responders battling the blaze.

The gear was not what it is today.

The exact location of the property has been kind of a mystery, even to town historians and fire officials.

Alas, after a little research, Kathy Bach of the Tolland Historical Society traced the station to where the Johnny Appleseed's farm stand is now on Route 30, across from the business park.
