Route 74 Bridge Closure Scheduled In Tolland

TOLLAND, CT — The Connecticut Department of Transportation Monday said the closure of Route 74 in Tolland over the Skungamaug River near Skungamaug Road will commence on May 6 and run until Aug. 8.

Work has already begun toward the replacement of DOT Bridge No. 01120 carrying Route 74 over the Skungamaug River.

The pre-bridge closure work for this project has involved building temporary access roads for utility work and installing "micro-piles," according to DOT officials. The next portion of the project will consist of closing the bridge and implementing a detour plan to demolish the existing bridge.

Once micro-piles are completed, the new substructure components will be installed followed by the superstructure components, DOT officials said.

Final utility relocations will then occur, followed by membrane waterproofing on the bridge deck, pavement, and final applicable markings on the roadway, DOT officials said.

The project was awarded to ROTHA Contracting Company, Inc. at a cost of $4,779,424.50 on Aug. 16 and is scheduled to be completed when two-way traffic resumes on Aug. 8.

DETOUR/CLOSURE INFO

Starting on May 6, 2024, ROTHA Contracting Company will be implementing detour signs and closing the bridge over the Skungamaug River carrying Route 74 (Tolland Stage Road) in Tolland. Signs on Merrow Road, Route 74 (Tolland Stage Road) and I-84 will be displayed to give proper direction and warning. This detour will end, and Route 74 will be opened by August 8, 2024. Route 74 Eastbound/West Side of the Skungamaug River Bridge

All motorists Route 74 eastbound on the west side of the Skungamaug River Bridge will be detoured west on Route 74 (Tolland Stage Road), left (south) on Route 195, left (east) on I-84 to take Exit 69, then left (west) on Route 74 (Tolland Stage Road).

Route 74 Westbound/ East Side of the Skungamaug River Bridge ... All motorists Route 74 westbound on the east side of the Skungamaug River Bridge will be detoured east on Route 74 (Tolland Stage Road), right (west) on I-84, take exit 68 off-ramp, right (north) on Route 195, and right (east) on Route 74 (Tolland Stage Road).
