Couches and chairs are vulnerable to surface stains, dust, dirt, and grime that can become deeply embedded into the fibers.

If the couch or chair has removable covers, you can wash them in the washing machine or take them to the dry cleaners. If not, you may have to get a little more creative.

Your best bet is to clean up surface stains as soon as possible, as fresh stains are easier to lift off.

When you’re ready to clean, you could buy upholstery cleaning products, but you don’t have to. Mild laundry detergent and warm water, mixed well to create suds, could be used. You could also use white vinegar or baby wipes.

If you have upholstered furniture, vacuum first to remove as much surface dirt and dust as possible. Then spot clean. Next comes the overall cleaning. Use baby wipes or vinegar poured on a strong, microfiber cloth. Apply the product to any obvious stain, wiping gently as you go.

Once you’ve finished cleaning the furniture, allow it to dry naturally. Open the windows to speed the drying process.

Leather couches and chairs can be a little more difficult.

You’ll want to stay away from water as much as possible, as it could stain the material. You may want to try using a steam cleaner if possible. Apply cleaning products made with oils and waxes – like saddle soap. This will clean the couch while also moisturizing it, preventing it from drying out and cracking. It will also protect it from future dirt and stains.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your furniture can help prevent the dirt and grime build-up. Always clean up stains as soon as possible, vacuum the couches and chairs at least once a week, and wash regularly parts that are removable.
