Tolland Preschool Eye Screening

Successful Eye Screening Campaign

The Tolland Lions Club completed two weeks of free pediatric eye screening in Tolland. The Lions screened the eyesight of 250 preschool children. The screening was held at seven Tolland preschools, Birch Grove preschool, and the Tolland Family Resource Center.

A high-tech computer-camera was used to detect six common eye sight problems. The camera is accurate, takes ten seconds to screen, and is very child-friendly; making it ideal for preschooler children. The equipment and training for the Lions are provided by the Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation (C.L.E.R.F.) at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven.

Early identification of children with eyesight problems is important for long-term preservation of eyesight.
This year's screening resulted in 18 children who were referred to an eye care professional for further evaluation and treatment. The Tolland Lions, through the 'Kidsight Program', are able to screen any age child. The Tolland Club performs these screenings annually and hopes to continue expanding this valuable service for Tolland.
