Successive Crashes Cause Havoc On I-84 In Tolland

TOLLAND, CT — Back-to-back accidents in Tolland tied up traffic along a stretch of Interstate 84 Tuesday, state police said.

The first incident took place at 3:15 p.m.

According to a crash report, a tractor-trailer a 33-year-old Hartford man was driving a tractor trailer westbound on I-84 in the area of Exit 69 and 68 in the right lane of three. In the center lane was a 2023 Tesla with a 25-year-old Nashua, NH, man behind the wheel, according to a crash report.

The Tesla swerved and collided with the truck's rear trailer wheel well, according to a crash report, and the Tesla then veered onto the shoulder and collided with an embankment, according to a crash report.

The Tesla wound up about 25 yards into the woods bordering the highway, according to a crash report.

The truck driver reported no injuries and refused medical attention on scene. The driver of the Tesla reported no injuries and was evaluated by Tolland EMS on scene, according to a crash report. He was issued an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

That was not the end of things.

At 4:12 p.m., a 76-year-old West Hartford man driving a 2024 Toyota Prius was in the right-hand lane and a 35-year-old East Hartford man in a Kenworth construction rig in the center lane were approaching the traffic backup near Exit 69, according to a crash report.

The truck driver did not see the Toyota and merged right into its path and the two collided, according to a crash report.

Tolland fire officials said traffic was snarled while the two crashes were cleaned up. No was was hurt, state police said.

The truck driver was found to beat fault for the collision and was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain the proper lane, state police said.
