The first thing to do is to sit down and think about how much time you have, how messy your house is, and who is coming. This will determine how you prioritize rooms that need to be cleaned. You can probably keep the master bathroom out of sight if there are other bathrooms that guests can use, but if a bunch need to shower in the morning, you will have to open up all available bathrooms.
Once you have an idea of where you want to get, and how long you have to get there, you can know how much time you have to complete each step of the list.

Now that you have that settled, make a list of the rooms and prioritize them according to where guests will spend the most time. Write down the rooms in order, and under each room write the things you want to do which aren’t covered by everyday cleaning.
Next, walk around your house, going through the rooms in order of priority according to your list, carrying a trash bag. Throw in the dead plant, stack of school papers, broken toys, etc. that are adding to the mess.
You’ll also want to declutter. Go through your house and remind yourself of things you’ve been meaning to get rid of. Stick it in the garage for your next garage sale, or even better, take it to a donation drop-spot right now.
Clean your kitchen. People will probably congregate here and a clean kitchen will mean that you’ll be able to do all the things you need to in order to prepare for your guests’ arrival.
You’ll also want to make sure you clean the bathrooms. Clean them well, and then check them for clutter daily, wipe them down, and re-clean them before the guests arrive.
Now you can actually clean the rooms that you’ve decluttered. Straighten the rooms, put everything in place, and tackle the above-and-beyond tasks.
Don’t forget to dust, vacuum, and wash the floors.
