Tolland Boys Earn Berth in Class M Final Four

The Eagles upset second-seeded Plainfield Saturday to advance to the state semifinals.

PLAINFIELD, CT — Bob Arremony entered the gymnasium at Plainfield High School Saturday afternoon expecting a celebration of several milestones by the end of the day. His Panthers, seeded second in the Class M boys basketball tournament, were 14-0 at home this season, and a victory in the quarterfinal matchup against Tolland would not only propel his team into the Final Four, but would be the 500th win of his illustrious coaching career.

Arremony and Plainfield will have to, as Brooklyn Dodger fans used to lament, "wait 'til next year."

Tolland, the number 10 seed, spoiled the host's plans by posting a 55-46 win to earn itself a semifinal matchup against No. 11 Brookfield Tuesday. That game will be played Tuesday at Maloney High School in Meriden, beginning at 7 p.m.

The winner of that contest will face either No. 4 Holy Cross or No. 8 Bloomfield in the Class M championship game next weekend at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Those schools face off Tuesday night at New Britain High School.

Tolland trailed 27-22 at halftime Saturday, but a 14-6 third quarter nudged them in front to stay.

Andrew Jaworski poured in 33 points and Jason Clough added 14 to provide the majority of the Eagles' offense. Jaworski has tallied 92 points in Tolland's three state tournament wins, and is a finalist for this week's CPTV UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week.
