Tolland Boys Repeat as Class M Cross Country Champions

The CIAC divisional cross country championships took place Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester.

MANCHESTER, CT — The annual gathering of nearly 2,000 high school runners at the CIAC divisional cross country championships at Wickham Park Saturday wound up producing a number of interesting numbers and statistics.

  • Pomperaug (Class L) and Haddam-Killingworth (SS) captured both the boys and girls team titles. In 2016, only Tolland accomplished that feat.
  • Four of the six boys division team titlists were repeat winners from the previous year: Staples (LL), Tolland (M), Haddam-Killingworth (SS) and Lyman Memorial (S). On the girls' side, Pomperaug (L) repeated as champion, while Immaculate took the Class S crown after winning the SS division in 2016.
  • The fastest winning times of the day were posted by: boys - Drew Thompson, Fairfield Prep (LL), 15:40; girls - Morgan McCormick, Wilton (L), 18:19.
  • The largest individual margins of victory were: girls - 50 seconds, Bethany Ottowitz, Watertown (MM); boys - 22 seconds, Ken Little, Derby (S).
  • The closest individual victory margins were: boys - 4 seconds, Drew Thompson, Farifield Prep (LL); girls - 12 seconds, Elizabeth Stockman, Rocky Hill (M).
  • The widest point differentials between a winning team and runner-up were: boys - 65 points, Haddam-Killingworth over Immaculate (SS); girls - 46 points, Pomperaug over Guilford (L).
  • The narrowest point differentials between first and second place teams were: boys - 4 points, Lyman Memorial over Bolton (S); girls - 8 points, Glastonbury over Greenwich (LL).
  • Overall, 255 team scores were posted, with another 126 finishers from schools which did not post team scores. A total of 1,828 athletes crossed the finish line over the course of the day.
