Tolland Hosts Cultural Responsive Training

The Town of Tolland will be hosting a public one-hour session on Cultural Responsive Training, to be held Thursday, July 9th at 6:00 pm.

The Town of Tolland will be hosting a public one-hour session on Cultural Responsive Training, to be held Thursday, July 9th at 6:00 pm. Nicole Kowal will lead and facilitate this training. Please see Nicole’s biography below.

All are welcome to attend this training, titled: Introduction to LGBQ/GNCT Individuals
This session will provide an introduction and overview of some of the definitions & pronouns people who identify on the LGBTQ/GNCT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Questioning or Gender Non-Conforming, Transgender) spectrums may use. Focus will be given to the discussion of data pertaining to the risk factors of youth who end up homeless and in the juvenile justice system, advocacy happening in Connecticut around transgender and intersex for individuals, and information on transgender people to include hormone replacement therapy, blockers, transitioning, and how it affects their lives.

Nicole Kowal is a Tolland resident and founder of Tolland's Pride in the Park which is an annual Pride event to celebrate the queer community in the month of June. She is Court Planner and has been with the Judicial Branch for 9 years; started her career as a Juvenile Detention Officer. She is the Project Coordinator for the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) Data Collection Initiative and is passionate about her work towards ensuring LGBTQI+ youth are served fairly within the juvenile justice system in Connecticut. Nicole has attended many training and conventions that focus on the topics of LGBTQI+ youth during her career and she is part of the LGBTQI+ community. Nicole has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science in National Security and Public Safety from the University of New Haven. She graduated from the Tow Youth Justice Institute’s Transforming Youth Justice: A Leadership Development Program in 2017, and has been awarded the HART Shining Star Award in 2019 for her work on combating Child Trafficking in the state of Connecticut.
