Tolland Residents Asked to Be Careful With Recyclables

Tolland's trash hauler has sent a letter to town officials about recycling.

TOLLAND, CT — Tolland residents have been asked by the town't hauler to be a little more careful about recycling.

Town officials on Tuesday said they have received a letter from Willimantic Waste Paper Company indicating that "an enormous volume of unacceptable items" have been showing up in Tolland bins.

The biggest "culprits" have been plastic bags, trash, and food waste, officials said. Unrinsed containers, clothing, garden hoses, Styrofoam, and small items like needles, pens, and small toys have also been found in Tolland's recycling stream, officials said.

"When such items are included in a recycling pickup, the load is considered contaminated and the town losses out on the money generated from the recyclables, which is used to offset the cost of trash pick-up.
We ask that you be mindful of cleaning your recyclables and only including acceptable items in your tote," Tolland officials said.
