Tolland Veterans Recognition Commission
The Tolland Veterans Recognition Commission was created on February 13,2007, and was establish by the Tolland Town Council under the Chairmanship of Kathy Bach. The first Tolland Veterans Recognition Commission consisted of the following members, Frederick Fry, Richard E. Tapp, John Kearns, Joe Souza and Machelle Harrison. The first official meeting of the Veterans commission was May 16, 2007 where the members elected the first Chairman. Once Richard E. Tapp became the Veteran Commission Chairman, he and the Tolland Town Council worked together to provide recognition of Tolland resident veterans at town ceremonies as they returned home from active duty. Richard E. Tapp was the driving force behind the establishment of the present Wall of Honor that is located in the Tolland Town Hall’s 2nd floor hallway at the rear of the building. With the help of Tolland Historical Society archivist, Barbra Cook, who had documented all of the Tolland citizens that had served in the wars of America from the French and Indian War thru WWII. Richard Tapp and his wife continued this quest once the wall was established. They contacted family members of Tolland who had served in WWI, WWII and all subsequent conflicts thru Iraq and Afghanistan. As Tolland veterans provided their DD214 documents confirming they lived in Tolland, and had served our country with honor, their names were then added to the Wall of Honor each year by Richard Tapp.
