The Catcher in the Rye was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English language novels of the 20th century. The novel’s protagonist Holden Caulfield has become an icon for teenage rebellion. The novel also deals with complex issues of identity, belonging, loss, connection, and alienation. Join us for a lively discussion.

Discussion leader Joan Shapiro, Founder of Blue Spruce Press, has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Wesleyan and a Bachelor’s Degree from Brandeis in English and American Literature. She has had a 30-year career teaching, writing, editing and publishing. Her publications include two volumes of poetry, numerous short stories, articles, and reviews.
