TOLLAND, CT — Want to perform weddings in Tolland? Here's your chance.
Tolland is looking for appointees to become a local justice of the peace.

Appointment of Unaffiliated and Minor Party JP's by Town Clerk
Between August 1, 2024 and November 1, 2024, any unaffiliated elector or minor party elector residing in the Town of Tolland may apply to the Town Clerk for appointment as a Justice of the Peace.
ALL incumbent minor party & unaffiliated Justices of the Peace who apply will be reappointed.
Any remaining minor party & unaffiliated slots will then be filled with non-incumbent applicants.
If there are more applicants than there are remaining appointive slots, the Town Clerk will hold a lottery on or before November 22, 2024.
The terms of all Justices of the Peace selected this year will be 4 years, beginning January 6, 2025 to January 2, 2029.

According to the Connecticut General Assembly, the role of a justice of the peace is authorized by statute.

- Among other things, a justice of the peace may:
- Administer oaths (CGS § 1-24)
- Sign affidavits after administering oaths (CGS § 1-24)
- Acknowledge legal written documents (CGS § 1-29)
- Perform marriage ceremonies (CGS § 46b-22)
- Take depositions and issue subpoenas to compel witnesses to attend such depositions (CGS § 52-148c)
- Subpoena witnesses to appear before the board of police commissioners of any municipality (CGS § 7-279)
Issue tax warrants (CGS § 12-130).
