1 Resident Injured In Trumbull House Fire: FD

TRUMBULL, CT — Crews fought freezing temperatures and stubborn flames as they worked to extinguish a structure fire that broke out early Wednesday morning at a Wilson Avenue home and injured a resident, according to fire officials.

In a post on the Trumbull Volunteer Fire Company, No. 1, Inc. Facebook page, fire officials said Trumbull Center, Long Hill and Nichols firefighters were called to the home around 3 a.m. after receiving reports of heavy fire in the garage extending into the other areas of the house.

When crews arrived, heavy fire could be seen on three sides of the home, officials said. Firefighters confirmed the residents of the home had safely evacuated and worked to put out the fire.

One of the six residents suffered first-degree burns on his hands while trying to extinguish the fire, officials said.

Efforts to extinguish the blaze were made difficult by freezing temperatures and stubborn pockets of fire, as well as unconventional construction, officials said.

Approximately 30 firefighters from the Trumbull Center, Long Hill, Nichols and Monroe fire departments worked to extinguish the flames while members of the Huntington Fire Company 3 provided town-wide coverage, officials said.

The Trumbull Fire Marshall's Office is investigating the origin and cause of the fire, officials said.

Fire officials also emphasized the importance of residents "having working smoke detectors on every level and in every sleeping room" of their home.
