During the presentation, Thomas will thank local officials for their dedication to ensuring elections are accessible, accurate and fair, according to the release.
"Every day, I think about how we can make it easier and more meaningful for people to participate in our representative democracy, and it's not just about policy," Thomas said in a news release. "Turnout depends on the dedication of local election officials who ensure every election runs smoothly. From maintaining accurate voter rolls to educating voters and providing options like early voting, their work makes it possible for every eligible resident to have their voice heard."
Trumbull First Selectman Vicki Tesoro said winning the Democracy Cup is a great honor.
"Trumbull is a great town to live in, and Trumbull voters show up because they love their town and care about its future," Tesoro said in a news release. "I want to thank our voters for coming to the polls and our town staff and poll workers who worked hard to make voting as smooth as possible."
According to the release, other municipalities earning the 2025 Democracy Cup for exceeding statewide participation levels within their respective population categories are:
- Lyme with 66.10% turnout in the Small Town category for municipalities with fewer than 10,000 residents.
- Orange with 51.11% turnout in the Mid-Sized Town category for municipalities with 10,000 to 30,000 residents.
- Fairfield with 44.22% turnout in the City category for municipalities with more than 65,000 residents.
The Democracy Cup program started in 2000 when the cups were privately purchased by a donor interested in recognizing voter turnout and then donated them to the state, according to the release.
The cups rotate from town to town each year, with the winning towns' names engraved on the base, according to the release.
